Canada -- More Tourists Looking Toward Las Vegas

March 21, 2015

How much do Canadians love to gamble? Well, they certainly don't mind traveling to do it. That is the result of some recent information that was brought forth by destination-related websites such as Hotels.com.

This comes even after the Canadian dollar has fallen. It is a statement about their attraction toward a vacation destination that offers gambling than anything else. And there is also added incentive in the fact that they can get some value in a place like Las Vegas, which draws a very significant number of Canadian tourists.

While there is little question that people from all over the country will travel to "Sin City," there is obviously much more to be cultivated out of the western provinces. For example, as the site gathered statistics on the number of searches that involved "Las Vegas," there was a 46% increase coming out of major cities such as Winnipeg and Edmonton compared to what was there a year before. As for Vancouver, searches were up 25%.

Lots of Canadian artists have found fortune in Las Vegas, starting with Paul Anka and extending to the likes of Celine Dion and Shania Twain. Of course, the Cirque du Soleil, a Las Vegas institution, has its roots in Canada.

Obviously a lot depends on the time of year; what has been recognized is that March has proven to be a very popular time of the year for a Canadian gambling tourist to be traveling. And perhaps the stats provided by Hotels.com may not be the most accurate, But it makes a lot of sense that a city that has amenities they don't have access to.

And let us not forget another thing; that the land-based casino business, as it is represented in Canada, with government-licensed and backed entities, there is not nearly the quality nor choice that is offered by the Las Vegas titans.

And here is an interesting twist to all this - the NHL, which seems to line up against sports gambling when it involves giving Canadians additional options does not seem to mind that there is a group in Las Vegas that is taking deposits on season tickets for a prospective NHL team that they would like to bring there. Within 48 hours, they had reportedly gathered 5000 deposits, and then less than two weeks later reached the 7000-mark.

If such a thing were to happen, that would be yet another attraction (or excuse) to bring Canadians into Nevada - to see their hometown team in a road game.
